Upgraded my mid 2007 Macbook Pro’s hard drive

Last week I was able to successfully perform a surgery on my old mid-2007 macbook pro. I replaced the 120GB Fujitsu hard drive that it came with, with a 500 GB WD Scorpio.

Here's how it looks inside.

I just followed all the steps from iFixit.com, basically removing all screws that get on the way. And slowly opened the top(keyboard) part and that’s it.

Preparations
Before I swapped harddrives, I made sure to make the new HD a clone of my existing one. I used SuperDuper to make an exact bootable clone of my internal hardisk so that when I will swap them, I will no longer need to worry about installation and copying files.

Online Security

Earlier today in the office a colleague of mine shouted out for help. He said he received an email telling him that his Facebook profile has been compromised. Someone was accessing it, and worse changed the Email for the user. With the help of another colleague who is an expert on online security and computers, they were able to sort it out.

We also had a similar experience from my previous company. However the email was a malicious one. First it says that your Facebook account has been hacked/compromised. And you need to click on a link, or download something. One guy opened it, and there a spyware was infesting his system. I was able to fix his spyware temporarily.

Acer Aspire M3610 drivers

I have been busy reformatting some pcs here in the office. They got infected with a spyware. Remember those “your facebook password has changed” emails a month ago? That was the culprit. That, and another sneaky email
pretending to be from UPS that comes with an attachment.

Anyway, both computers “got sick” so it had to be reformatted. Everything is fine except that on one machine the ATI videocard driver is not installing..

I tried searching from Acer’s download page but they dont have drivers for the Aspire M3610 model for Windows Xp. They have Vista drivers though.

I am wondering if anyone has a link i can go to. I tried AMD as well but it doesnt install.

When moving items (window) it drags like a snail!

Help anyone?

Content is King

We have read that before. In the world of Web Design, Content is King.

A “lightbulb” moment came to me just a minute ago. And I thought I would share it with you.
I believe that people, in the context of web design, do not mind scrolling or clicking to the next page as long as the content is worthwhile.

Sorry if this is going to be just a short blog, well, this isnt supposed to be a lecture, but just an insight.

For example, you visit a website and you see a two-paragraph legal “documentation” with all the definitions on the homepage. And on another website you are greeted with a picture of Kurt Cobain, and you see excerpts of his life, his music, his band.. and you have several links to click to get to more information about him.

If you like Kurt Cobain, surely you would read them all, than those 2 paragraphs from the other website.

Well if you are concerned about how safe is your browsing, then you would choose website #1.

TWO months of the year 2010 has passed and I think I am basically on the same “figurative” plane as I was before.

Not really though. I have been constantly reading articles about design from a guy who does make a lot of sense to me. I emailed him, and told him that I have learned a lot from what he has been writing. Some articles go back as far as 2006.

They are the fundamentals. The basics that I missed when I hopped on to the web design train some 8 years ago.

I used to read Jakob Nielsen then. But it seems to me like designing sites like useit.com would get me zero clients. Then again, the basics of what he has preached still holds true. That people don’t want to think when they browse a website.

And in the words I will borrow from mr Andy, “everything in context”.

Short term goals. Alright then. I must climb up this curve. This sine wave!

Well, I will focus, or at least try to focus on Digital djing, with my VCI100SE. Alongside with that, I would like to lose some weight.

Only time will prove that those two things may require only 2-3months.

Simple buttons using Javascript/CSS

Sometimes there is a need to change the “class” of an object to apply a different style to it. For example you have 4 css buttons, then you want one to be “Active”, maybe highlighted different from the rest. And when you click another button, the “Active” button becomes “Inactive” and a new button becomes “Active”.

I will show you how to access it using javascript.

CSS
First you need to define your styles, “.active” and “.inactive”

.active {
background-color:#FF0000; (meaning red)
}

.inactive {
background-color:#FFFFFF; (meaning white, all buttons should start with white)
}

JAVASCRIPT

There are two options to change a class for a certain document element

#1 setAttribute(“class”, “active”);
#2 className = ‘active’;

Button = a variable passed when we click a button. For example if we click the 2nd button it passes “Button02″ as the value.

You can do this by onClick = “changeToActive(‘Button02′)”

Then in your javascript function will say

function changeToActive(x) {

document.getElementById(x).setAttribute(“class”, “active”);

}

function changeToActive(x) {

document.getElementById(x).setAttribute(“class”, “active”);

}

That’s it!

Remember that you need to set all buttons “Inactive” first so that they are all white. Then you choose which one to set as “Active”
